Skips Messages - Leaves them on server

Beitragvon TronixA » 7. Jul 2014, 16:44

Hi, I noticed that recently Spamihilator has been skipping over unread messages on the POP server and it seems to pick these messages at random. I will continue to download other emails that come through but once it has decided that it doesn't want to download a particular message, the only way to get the message is by going to the email website and viewing/deleting it there. This is not preferable though in case the message is important. Here's what shows up in the server.log file.

This behavior just started about two months ago and I've been using the software without a problem before this for several years.

I changed the actual name of the server info for sec purposes..

Note that the server addresses msg 2 & 3 but completely ignores msg 1. Msg 1 never gets sent over to the email client either.

I think I found the solution to the problem. apparently Spamihilator hadn't been compacted for a few months (it wasn't taking up much memory though so I never bothered to compact). This seems to have done the trick. Not sure if the program is still being actively developed or not but this could possibly be some kind of bug...

Hmmm looks like I spoke too soon...the bug returned and Spami is not picking up some messages on the server again. Compacting seemed to have no effect this time.

Hi to all!

Does this concern the Learning Filter’s memory? I have extended it to 2048.

I’m not sure, because I’m rather an advanced user than a technician, but perhaps there is a sticky mail in the folders of Spamihilator, and it might be useful to delete the content in the folders „cache“, „messages“ or „shared“. After receiving all mails, after completing learning, it could be the best idea to uninstall and reinstall Spamihilator. It should not be too difficult for Spamihilator to tide over the short time until the learning filter has built up enough words.

With kind regards,
Chactory

Thanks for the info Chactory...I did try deleting those folders however it didn't seem to make a difference. One other odd thing is that the Spam filter.log file isn't being written to. I checked the permissions on the file and don't see anything wrong with it...I made sure to give myself full rights to the file...rather odd.

Hello TronixA!

Recently I found myself with a sticky mail. It was a mail bigger than 16 MB because of pictures in attachments, and it was checked by the antivirus software, which took too long and caused a breakup. Stop and re-start of Spamihilator and of the mail client didn't help. Now I tried to delete those folders and to reinstall Spamihilator over the existing installation. I didn't know until now, that Michel Krämer, the program author of Spamihilator, has implemented a repair installation, which I carried out and which solved my problem.

Yours sincerely,
Chactory

Hi Chactory!

I did try reinstalling Spamihilator and at first it seemed that the messages from my email account were downloading...Later on I discovered that it still was leaving emails on the server but it did fix an issue I was having with the spam filter statistics not working.

Hi TronixA!

Thank you for still responding! :)

After having tried the thought about a problem with the learning filter, and after an unsuccessful attempt to repair your Spamihilator installation, I have read all informations again.

Spamihilator is skipping those mails in a way so self-evident, that I am disposed to think that it could be a correct procedure, only misunderstood by us both. I should be interested in more details, e.g., can you be sure not having entered the senders in your blocked senders list?

Regards,
Chactory

Re: Skips Messages - Leaves them on server

So I did some more troubleshooting. Removing all filters allows the message to download through Spamihilator. If I remove the filters one at a time to see if one particular filter is causing the problem, it doesn't work. Also, I don't think that Spamihilator is properly processing the messages since it leaves the message on the server. If it was a spam filter (for example blacklist), it would remove the message from the server and add it to the recycle bin. This does not happen.

I hope that the developer can read this message and work with me to squash this software bug....

One interesting thing is that I am getting the following error in the client log: -ERR A message could not be added to Spamihilator's Recycle Bin. This is a fatal error. Spamihilator will abort connection to avoid losing mails.

Maybe something is wrong with the recycle bin database. Any idea on how to clean that up?

Thanks!

Hello TronixA!

The database for the training area and for the recycle bin is
C:\Users\Chactory\AppData\Roaming\Spamihilator\messages.db,
and the mails are stored in
C:\Users\Chactory\AppData\Roaming\Spamihilator\messages.

Be sure you have downloaded all important mails, before you delete those. Delete the relevant mail from the mailserver manually by the web interface.

Hope this helps - sorry, I'm not enough expert in mail technique ... :(

Cheers,
Chactory
