Spamihilator Is Not Remembering Non Spam Mails.

Beitragvon Novice22 » 18. Jun 2012, 12:17

It says that it has learned from marked messages, but often it hasn't.
Can anyone help please?

Hi Novice22!

How do you know that it hasn't?

Cheers,

Thanks.
Because messages that have been marked as Non Spam
in the learning filter
are still being marked as Spam.

Hi Novice22,

it's just not that easy.

Professional spammers are using every possible trick to disguise their mails as non-spam. At the same time many non-spam mails (private messages or business correspondence) can contain single words that also frequently occur in spam mails.

The learning filter now has to decide if a single mail is spam or non spam, based on the words that occur in the mail. It often takes some time (mostly a week) until the learning filter has accumulated enough data to mark a certain type of non-spam-mails correctly. The same applies for spam-mails. In general, you'll discover, that after 2 weeks of using Spamihilator (including the training of the learning filter), Spamihilator will mark approx. 95% of the mails correctly.

You can further enhance the success rate of Spamihilator by the use and adjustment of the other filters. The easiest way in this special case would be to put the sender of the wanted mails in the friends-list, which means that the mails will always be treated and marked as non-spam.

Well, "learning filter", "training", "adjustment", "maintenance of friends-lists" etc., that might sound like much work, but it isn't. I'm using Spamihilator since 2007 and it really has saved me a lot of time. Before I used Spamihilator, the daily cleanup of spam-mails mostly took more than 15 minutes. Since I use Spamihilator, my daily anti-spam-work rarely takes more than 5 minutes and it has become much less of a hassle.

To make it short, just use Spamihilator for a week or two and get accustomed a little with the filters and options and you'll see how it makes your daily anti-spam-work much easier.

Cheers,
Dirk

Many thanks Dirk.
I am using Spamihilator almost as long as you are and I am sorry if I
gave any other impression.
I use the name novice only because I am still a novice at using computers,
but I have a lot of experience of using this excellent programme, and I
remember well the dark days before I found it.
I will explain the problem as best as I can Dirk.
As you know, I say that Spamihilator is not remembering things, but what
seems to be happening is that everything seems to get a turn in rotation
of being on the "Blacklist".
I guarantee you that there are things that are currently being given the
green light that will be marked otherwise in the near future.
Likewise, there are blacklisted things that will soon enjoy their time in the
sun!
Emails that I have sent to myself have at times been blocked.
I mark off items in the Training Area every few days, and on most days
everything can be marked as non spam.
Thankfully, I get very little spam, thanks to this fine programme, but more
than a little is marked as spam.
Your idea about marking things as relating to friends is, I think, an excellent
one, and I am going to explore that further as I have not very often used
that facility.
Hope I have not rambled too much.
Thanks again for your time and patience.

Hello Novice22, hello Dirk!

I'm sorry for letting you waiting for an answer again, but my job has nearly absorbed me ...

I still have not understood what you have watched, and it would be very helpful, if you would describe the problem using real examples. Please try to analyse every example by looking after the filtering reason (in the training window) and the mail source code.

Another reason could be eventually, that the memory of the Learning Filter is running out.

Kind regards,
Chactory

Very many thanks Dirk.
It would seem to me, all things considered,
that your suggestion about the memory of
the Learning Filter running out could be the
most likely explanation at this stage.
What can one do if this is the case?
Thanks.

Default memory size is 2048, as I remember. I'm using 4096.
If this does not help, it could be of use to try my hints above.
At the worst, uninstall and reinstall from scratch Spamihilator.
