Manual configuration directions for Thunderbird?

Beitragvon dhgold22 » 22. Apr 2010, 00:09

I have downloaded the program but the install wizard will not run (error message says "not responding").

The instructions for manual configuration are too confusing and only show a sample for Outlook Express.

How do I manually configure for Thunderbird?

Thanks.

P.S. Sorry for the previous post under zxc123..........this German/English thing is quite confusing. :D

Hallo dhgold22!

Does this help?
http://www.spamihilator.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=56242#p56242

If this your E-mail account:
Server: yourpop3server.com
Username: yourusername

Change it to:
Server: 127.0.0.1 (you can try "localhost" without the quotes, too)
Username: yourpop3server.com&yourusername

To avoid problems with sending mails in the style of FAQ.P02 change your SMTP Server settings accordingly.

Depending on your mail server you might want to enable SSL/TLS in SMTP settings

Thanks.

I had reviewed the information available at the first link earlier and didn't find it helpful.

However, your directions were very good. Unfortunately after making the changes you recommended the program proceeded to slowly go through 2500 messages, apparently located in my history, looking for spam. It was taking so much time I finally canceled the process.

Is there any way of avoiding that?

Thanks.

I don't seem to be having much luck with Spami.

I let the 2500 messages run through, but very close to the start I got an error message: "connection to server 127.0.0.1 timed out." I let it keep running through them anyway.

The next time I tried to get my mail it started running through the same 2500 messages all over again and gave me the same error message again.

At this point I have disabled Spami.

I guess I will have to give up on it unless someone has suggestion.

Hallo dhgold22!

Every Spamfilter has to scan the mails themselves in order to be able to make a decision (classify) if it is Spam or Non-Spam. This is unavoidable. If you already have 2500 Mails on your Mailserver before you start runnin Spami then it will have to go through these "old" messages once but only once, so it shouldn't be that big of a problem.

The timeout is a common thing, especially with a huge amount of mails sitting on your Mailserver and waiting to be classified.
The are two different timeout settings that are important here.
The one in Thunderbird and determines how long Thunderbird will wait for Spami to hand over the Non-Spam. Simply (Thunderbird 3 doesn't offer easy access to this function anymore, but it's doable) increase this value
The other timeout setting is in Spami, see the WIKI-entry for further information.

Don't get too upset about these timeouts, it's not the end of the world.
If a timeout occurs Spami's caching feature should be able to pick up the loose end from the last attempt and proceed with downloading more mails.
You might get a couple of timeouts in a row to download all 2500 messages but at the end it should work and even you should be happy. ;-)

The wiki-entry was in German so that didn't help.

I was able to increase the timeout in Thunderbird to 1200 but it still didn't work. There were multiple problems and a lot of going back and forth.

I have to give up at this point. I will try to find another spam program.

Thanks again for your help. I'm sorry it didn't work out.
