Pop3Notifier sometimes fails

Beitragvon L'aigle Noir » 12. Jan 2010, 19:30

Hi,

I'm having a strange problem with Pop3Notifier. I have set it to check my mailbox every 30 minutes, and according to the logs it seems it manages to actually do it only roughly every other time.

This is a normal, succesful entry in client.log:

Client Log started at: 12.1.2010 - 19:40:10
19:40:10 S: +OK Spamihilator 0.9.9.52 ready
19:40:10 C: USER mail.xxx.com&laiglenoir&995
19:40:10 S: +OK Username accepted
19:40:10 C: PASS ********
19:40:10 S: +OK Password accepted
19:40:10 C: LIST
19:40:10 S: +OK Message list follows
19:40:10 S: 1 2782
19:40:10 S: 2 3966
19:40:10 S: 3 4283
19:40:10 S: 4 2603
19:40:10 S: .
19:40:10 C: UIDL
19:40:10 S: +OK UID list follows
19:40:10 S: 1 3bb299470000aa04
19:40:10 S: 2 3bb299470000aa05
19:40:10 S: 3 3bb299470000aa07
19:40:10 S: 4 3bb299470000aa14
19:40:10 S: .
19:40:10 C: QUIT
19:40:10 S: +OK Everything done.

And here's a failed entry:

Client Log started at: 12.1.2010 - 20:10:10
20:10:10 S: +OK Spamihilator 0.9.9.52 ready
20:10:10 C: mail.xxx.com&laiglenoir&995
20:10:10 S: -ERR Spamihilator: Unknown command
20:10:10 C: QUIT
20:10:10 S: +OK Everything done.

As you can see, the second line in the failed entry is missing the USER command at the beginning altogether, so it's no wonder Spamihilator throws an error. What really puzzles me is that this happens, as I said, only about half of the time, i.e. about every other connection fails. And it only happens when Pop3Notifier checks the mail, checks from MUA work every time.

Spamihilator version 0.9.9.52, Pop3Notifier version 0.3.3 and a POP3 account. This happened also with Pop3Notifier 0.3.2, but not with any older version as far as I can see.

Hallô L'aigle Noir!

Thank you for your contribution and for giving us insight into your log-files! As far as this is a very technical question, I hope that Michel Krämer, the program author of Spamihilator, will read this.

Hi!

Very weird issue. I already saw that happening when Outlook tried to connect with Spamihilator but not POP3Notifier. Nevertheless, I will fix the "bug" until the next Spamihilator version which will be released at the end of January.

Michel

Thanks a lot, Michel and Chactory! I'll be waiting for the next release. It's a weird issue indeed, but not a showstopper, since mails get checked anyway, although not every time :).

It seems this problem still exists in 0.9.9.53, the symptoms have just changed a little.

Client Log started at: 2.2.2010 - 22:39:35
22:39:35 S: +OK Spamihilator 0.9.9.53 ready
22:39:35 C: mail.xxx.com&laiglenoir&995
22:39:35 S: +OK Username accepted
22:39:35 C: QUIT
22:39:35 S: +OK Everything done.

The USER command is still left out on the second line. Only that now Spami doesn't throw an error message anymore, it just quits. A correct log entry (the next connection a half an hour later) looks like this:

Client Log started at: 2.2.2010 - 23:09:35
23:09:35 S: +OK Spamihilator 0.9.9.53 ready
23:09:35 C: USER mail.xxx.com&laiglenoir&995
23:09:35 S: +OK Username accepted
23:09:35 C: PASS ********
23:09:36 S: +OK Password accepted
23:09:36 C: LIST
23:09:36 S: +OK Message list follows
23:09:36 S: 1 3328
23:09:36 S: .
23:09:36 C: UIDL
23:09:36 S: +OK UID list follows
23:09:36 S: 1 3bb299470000aa7d
23:09:36 S: .
23:09:36 C: QUIT
23:09:36 S: +OK Everything done.

Looking at my log, it still seems roughly half of the connection attempts fail, usually every other time. And only the connections from POP3Notifier fail, never those from the mail client.

P.S. Thanks for the new Rules filter! It can be very powerful if used correctly.

Hi!

Mmhh... Without any visible error, this problem will be hard to solve.

Re: Pop3Notifier sometimes fails

Well, since it fails only about every other time, I can of course get past it by setting Pop3Notifier to check mail twice that often. But somehow that doesn't sound like an optimal solution... :)

The problem is obviously that the smtp USER command appears to be left out regularly, which of course makes the connection fail. But why that happens and why not every time, is unfortunately absolutely beyond me. I hope you'll figure the culprit out at some point. Just let me know if I can do anything to help.
