Running spamihilator's data from a different drive

Beitragvon stunts » 28. Mär 2009, 19:45

Is it possible to run spamihilator's data from a different drive other than c? I've got an SSD and am trying to reduce writes to the drive, and spamihilator is one program that writes a lot of files to the drive over time so I'd like to move the data to a different drive which is better suited to the job. I've tried installing the spamilhilator program to a different drive but notice that even though the program is on a different drive, the data is still put on my users folder on c. I've searched the registry to see if there is a reference to where the data is written and to all ini files but I have found no way to stop the program using the c drive so if its possible then I'd appreciate pointers, thanks.

Hello stunts!

There is no direct option in Spami do adjust this.
However, during the installation you can choose between the global installation and user-specific installation. If you choose the global one everything (temps/logs/plugins/mails) is written in the Spami installation folder.

Another good idea for you would be to change the path to the user folder in windows itself, so all all user specific files would be stored on a separated partition/hard drive.

Hi to all,

@ stunts, why do you want to reduce writes to a SSD? I understand SSD as rather exceptionally appropriate to perform many reading and writing tasks ...

Thanks Quellcore, I shall try the first option and report back firstly. The second option is more major but hopefully doable if the first option doesn't work.

Hallo stunts!

Good Luck.
You have to uninstall Spamihilator and manually remove some folders/files/registry entries:

See Chactory's FAQ Translation section 24:

Hi Chactory, I have an MLC based SSD which has lifetime limit of 10000 cycles per sector (I tried to supply a link to info but it wont allow it) - basically every write uses part of that lifetime so I've been looking at anything on my SSD C drive to move off to a huge 1tb drive. Spamihilator is a very good candidate because it uses very little CPU and does not need the fast drive of the SSD but does a lot of very tiny writes to the drive for each email that comes in (I get about 1000 per day) so could happily live on a different drive.

I'm afraid I did not find a global installation option on installing (this is version 0.9.9.44), this is what I had:- Welcome -> License -> Choose components -> Destination folder -> enable/disable DCC -> Install.

Hello stunts!

BTW:
You will loose your Spami settings, so you might want to backup the folders before removal.
U can also try the export settings feature, but since youy will change the installation method importing these settings later on could give funky results ;-)

You can alway partially move settings/files back from your manual backup into you new Spami installation.

Thank you Quellcore for all of your help and pointers. I've followed FAQ 24 precisely, and even enabled viewing of all hidden files including system files and searched for any references to spamihilator (I only found some prefetch files) plus checked the registry for any references also. And did a reboot just in case. However on rebooting, I still did not get a 'user settings' option unfortunately. Installing the software on my laptop as a test I did however get that setting inbetween the folder location and the DCC setting so I can see where it is meant to occur. My OS is Vista 64 so I do not know if that has any significance ? That setting is exactly what I need to do so if I can't get it to 'trigger' then I may leave it until I do a fresh OS install in the summer.

Hello stunts!
But unfortunately, it has! Michel Krämer, the program author of Spamihilator, will distribute a program version suitable for the 64-bit-OS within the next month, as far as I know.

Sorry to hear that.
The problem is not so much the 64Bit OS but Vista, i doubt you will find the option even on 32Bit Vista. I assume you got an older OS like Windows XP running on your where you were able to see the mentioned option :?:

With Vista and Future OS from MS you're out of luck, this option cannot be provided (just a guess, since i'm not the programmer) since Vista is much more strict when it comes to separate program installations from its settings.

I second you're feature request to be able to configure paths in Spamihilator.
Even if the author would consider this feature request it's unlikely to get implemented in the near future, since the ToDo-List is already quite long with a lot of more important fixes/requests.

Hello,

you can change a registry key in order to let Spamihilator save the settings in the program folder. See the following Wiki entry:
http://wiki.spamihilator.com/doku.php?i ... :multiuser

You will also have to create an empty "spamihilator.ini" next to the "spamihilator.exe" or copy the one from your user directory.

Sincerely,
Michel
